Drop-arm awnings (Fallarmmarkisen)The drop-arm awning belongs to the roll awning constructions, where the cloth can be wrapped on a winding shaft. It has two or more drop arms. These are fixed on the lower end of the drop profile. The drop arms hold a winding shaft, where the cloth is located. The cloth is supposed to serve as the actual dazzling protection, though it is not completely light-tight. This results in a dazzling protection and still it allows light to enter the room. The required tractive force is raised via compression springs, which are located on or in the drop arms. The pivoting range of a drop arm awning can be between 90 and 140 degrees, depending on the length and mounting height of the awning. In case the pivoting range is over 140 degrees, the tractive forces which are necessary to bend the expanded drop arms again, are extremely high. Furthermore, if the inclination angle is too big the seams of the cloth - so to say the cover - are heavily loaded and this could lead to serious damage. The operation of the drop-arm awning can take place electrically with the help of a tubular drive, or manually with a gear and a crank lever. An advantage of this kind of awning is that - in comparison to the articulated-arm awnings - it is quite simple and cheap. However, for the shadowing of bigger areas the drop-arm awning is rather not suitable. It is mostly used for windows or smaller balconies, but also in front of shop windows.
