Articulated-arm awnings (Gelenkarmmarkisen)

Due to the fact that with the articulated-arm awning there are two or more so called drop arms, which push the awning cloth − so to say the clothing − away from the winding shaft, an almost horizontal fall of the awning cloth is possible. Like with other types of awnings the basic construction consists of aluminium. Steel springs or gas springs give support when moving out the articulated-arm awning. These put the drop arms under tension, the awning cloth is pushed outwards and it is tightened by the arms. The retraction, however, needs a bigger exertion of force, because the spring pressure functions contrarily.

The articulated-arm awning is mainly used as sun protection and thermal protection. With this kind of awning the range of the moving out is limited to about four metres. Other constructions of the articulated-arm awning can extend to up to five metres. The maximum width of this kind of awning amounts to seven to eight metres. To achieve a wider area you can link up the awnings. The tilting can be set individually.

With the help of so called panels the articulated-arm awning is screwed with the brickwork. Awnings that are not intended as protection against rain must be retracted in case of stronger wind and rain. Because of the leverage there could be a damage of the awning or even the brickwork, in other words the construction (e.g. a waterpocket could occur). You can fix the articulated-arm awning on the wall as well as on the ceiling. Attention must be paid to the fact that a huge part of the leverage is transferred to the brickwork.

A distinction is made between two main kinds of articulated-arm awnings:

  • Open articulated-arm awnings
With these awnings the winding shaft is openly visible. They are also partly available with a roof.

  • Closed articulated-arm awnings / cassette articulated- arm awnings
With these awnings there is a protection fixed around the winding shaft and around the arms, a so called box or a cassette. This box protects the awning against climatic conditions.

Sub-categories of articulated-arm awning:

  • Case awning or cloth cassette awning
With this awning the winding shaft is only protected by an aluminium casing. The arms are bare.

The drive of the articulated-arm awning can either take place manually with a gear, which is moved by a connecting rod, or automatically with a tubular motor, which is inserted into the shaft
